As MMA becomes more and more popular, the training routines of the elite fighters are becoming public. It may surprise you to hear that Fedor doesn’t lift weights anymore, St. Pierre only lifts for 45 minutes a week, and Josh Koscheck doesn’t do any weight training either. This is actually quite common, with many fighters abandoning traditional weight training regimens, and exploring low-tech, simple, bodyweight excercises.
One product that can take full advantage of bodyweight excercises is the TRX system. The TRX is a relatively low cost, small and portable “gym.” It is comprised of high quality strap system, that can hook to various mounting spots like a door, pull-up bar, tree, or even a fence. You can do a variety of excercises that work the entire body, and if you think you need more resistance, you can adjust the length or the apparatus, or your body placement to really make things difficult.
While the TRX is relatively new, bodyweight training is proven. Many MMA athletes do not do the standard weight-lifting routines you might expect. Although most do not use the TRX, there are some that do and that number is growing fast. Some fighters that are using the TRX right now are Roger Huerta, Denis Kang, Bas Rutten, and Brandon Vera (see Vera training video below).
